The Internet of Things, also known as IoT, allows us to connect with our world unprecedented ways. Through smart devices and global connectivity, we have the ability to track environmental data, analyze weather patterns, and share information with anyone in the world. This democratization of information has led to swift advancements in environmental technology that can improve air quality, preserve rainforests, and more. Here are a few ways IoT is leading the charge in helping us build a more sustainable future.

Wildlife Preservation

Tracking collars, GPS-enabled chips, and electronic tags all help scientists understand the habits and track the migration of endangered species. The electronic signals from these tags are picked up by satellites and give researched a better understanding of the health, movements, and migration patterns of a single animal or group of species. Tracking technology has helped scientists protect a variety of endangered species including the Florida manatee, bald eagle, Iberian lynx and more.

Combating Deforestation

Microchipping isn’t only for animals. Environmental agencies such as The Rainforest Project have begun placing microchips on trees detect illegal logging in rainforests. Motion-sensing cameras and acoustic sensors in forests also alert authorities to images and sounds associated with logging or poaching, such as chainsaws, gunfire and human speech.

Monitoring Air and Water Quality

One of the most immediate benefits of IoT environmental tech has been the ability to monitor air quality, water quality and radiation in real-time. Pocket-sized sensors can now be placed anywhere in the world to help us better track carbon dioxide emissions, chemical radiation, weather patterns, and even predict natural disasters.

Smart home automation

Smart home technology is helping homeowners drastically reduce their environmental impact and save money on utilities. Smart devices with Wifi connectivity and remote capability, like thermostats, light bulbs and energy-efficient appliances, help residents track and curb their energy usage. Water sensors and smart plumbing devices like Flo helps residents conserve water by detecting leaks, tracking historical and real-time water usage, and setting water conservation goals.
