Ensure that FloSense sees a completed water event for irrigation

Ensure that FloSense sees the entire water event.

Warmer weather is coming! If your irrigation system is just starting for the season, the Shutoff’s FloSense technology has not yet learned what your irrigation system’s water events look like. We find that these tips are especially useful when it comes to helping FloSense learn your home’s irrigation faster and to reduce the potential for false alarms.

The Shutoff uses FloSense technology to monitor your home’s water usage patterns and is constantly learning to keep up with changes in your usual activity. Irrigation often requires more water and can look much different than indoor water events (i.e., sink or shower). Because irrigation events may look unusual to FloSense compared to your recent in-home water use, you may see a rise in false alarms.

FloSense learns new water behavior as “normal” when it sees consistent and completed water events. Some examples of water events may include a dishwasher cycle, a shower, or a nightly sprinkler watering. A water event is complete when it is not interrupted by the automatic shutoff feature.

When a new type of water event starts appearing (such as irrigation), FloSense will learn and adopt it as normal water use after it sees that type of event occur to completion several times.

Please identify your type of irrigation system and follow the method that best applies to you, for ensuring that FloSense sees a completed irrigation water event.

  • If your irrigation system runs based on a timer or set schedule, please click here.
  • If your irrigation system does not run based on a timer (i.e., weather)please click here.

For Irrigation That is Time-Scheduled or Timer-Based

If you know what time your irrigation system will run, try one of these methods using the Flo by Moen App beforehand to ensure FloSense will learn from a completed irrigation event.

Which method is best for me?
  • Adding Manual Overrides is a great option for users who are more engaged with the Flo by Moen App (Method 1): Read on to the next section.
  • Using Sleep Mode may be better for users who prefer less involvement with the app and customizing FloSense using the device settings (Method 2): Skip to the next section.
Method 1: Add Manual Overrides

Manual Overrides are recommended for any water event that recurs on a normal schedule, including irrigation. For example, if your sprinkler system runs on a set schedule from 5-6AM, you can set a manual override for that schedule.

Add a manual override for each irrigation event that runs on its own schedule.

How it works

The “manual override” overrides FloSense to prevent the automatic shutoff feature and allows the water event to complete during that time period, even if the event yields apparently abnormal usage. After several events, FloSense will learn from seeing these successfully completed events and adopt them as normal water usage behavior.

How to Set it Up

We recommend adding a manual override for each irrigation event that runs on its own schedule. You can do this in the Device Settings under “FloSense”, using the Flo by Moen App. For more information on how to navigate the Flo by Moen App to create a manual override, please click here.

To add a Manual Override, go to your Device Settings and, Under "Advanced Features", select FloSense™. You an set the manual override using the three parameters below:

  1. Gallons per minute: the allowed flow rate per minute.
  2. Water Per Event: the allowed water usage per event
  3. Water Duration: how long the water can run for before it triggers an alert.

When adding manual overrides, please remember to:

  • Give a meaningful name to each Manual Override, such as “Irrigation” or “Front Yard Sprinklers”.
  • This information will help FloSense learn better to differentiate between types of water events. You can also set and name manual overrides for other non-irrigation scheduled events, such as “Water Softener”.

  • Prioritize your manual overrides if there are any overlapping schedules.
  • When there are two or more manual overrides that have overlapping time periods, they need to be prioritized. The Override positioned higher on the list will be the one applied to override FloSense™, and should be the one with the higher water event thresholds (for larger water events). This will usually be the case for manual overrides specific to irrigation.

Please allow two weeks or so for FloSense to learn the new Manual Override schedule. At that time, we recommend removing the manual override since FloSense will have learned the new water usage behavior.

If you are still receiving alerts for irrigation afterward, we recommend adjusting the FloSense sensitivity bar. You can do this using the Flo by Moen App in the Device Settings under “FloSense”. For more information on how to do this using the Flo by Moen App, please click here.

    Method 2: Use Sleep Mode

This is a great option if you have just turned on irrigation for the season, and may be easier for users as an alternative to setting manual overrides. Just before you know your irrigation will turn on, set the Shutoff’s system mode to Sleep Mode for the duration of the irrigation event.

You can set the Shutoff to Sleep Mode for 2, 24, or 72 hours. We recommend setting your Shutoff to “Sleep Mode” for 2 hours if you know that’s how long your irrigation runs for, or set Sleep Mode for 24 hours if your irrigation runs longer than two hours. After doing this for the first couple sessions of the season, FloSense will pick up on the new behavior.

Set the Shutoff to Sleep Mode for 2, 24, or 72 hours.

NOTE: Please be aware that Sleep Mode blocks all alerts including the automatic shutoff feature and you will not be alerted in the event of unusual water activity or a leak.

If you are still receiving alerts for irrigation afterward, we recommend adjusting the FloSense sensitivity bar. To do this, go to your Device Settings and, Under "Advanced Features", select FloSense™. For more information on how to do this, please click here.

For Irrigation That is Not Timer-Based or Scheduled (i.e., Weather-Based)

For Irrigation That is Not Timer-Based or Scheduled (i.e., weather-based)

Not all irrigation systems run based on a timer-set schedule. For example, some systems use smart sensing to begin irrigation based on weather conditions or other methods of automatic sensing.

If you are unsure exactly when your irrigation system will run (i.e., it does not run based on a timer or set schedule), try one of these methods using the Flo by Moen App to ensure FloSense will learn from a completed irrigation event.

Which method is best for me?
    • If you are able to respond to your Flo by Moen App while your irrigation is running, we recommend helping FloSense learn with the “Keep Water Running” feature (Method 1): Read on to the next section.
    • If you are not able to interact with the app while your irrigation is running, we recommend using Sleep Mode (Method 2) : Skip to the next section.
Method 1: During the Event - Keep Water Running

Remember, in order for FloSense to learn a new irrigation water event, it is important to block the automatic shutoff feature that may occur a few minutes into the new or unknown event.

Please choose the “Keep Water Running” option instead of shutting off your water.

When this alert is sent to you on the Flo by Moen App, please choose the “Keep Water Running” option instead of shutting off your water. That way, FloSense will see the event from start to finish and begin to learn from it (once completed). After doing this for the first few times of the season, FloSense will pick up on the new behavior.

If you are still receiving alerts for irrigation afterward, we recommend adjusting the FloSense sensitivity bar. To do this, go to your Device Settings and, Under "Advanced Features", select FloSense™. For more information on how to do this, please click here.

For additional or direct assistance with customizing your Shutoff for irrigation, please contact our Support Team at 1-844-MEET-FLO or support@meetflo.com.

Method 2: Before the Event - Use Sleep Mode for 24 Hours

If you are unable to respond to the Flo by Moen App to “Keep Water Running” during the event, another method you can use is setting your Shutoff to "Sleep Mode" beforehand.

Just before you know your irrigation will turn on, set the Shutoff’s system mode to Sleep Mode for 24 hours. Because Sleep Mode allows all water events to occur without interruptions, FloSense will be able to see and learn from completed irrigation events. After doing this for the first couple times of the season, FloSense will pick up on the new behavior.

Set Your Shutoff to Sleep Mode for 24 hours

NOTE: Please be aware that Sleep Mode blocks all alerts including the automatic shutoff feature and you will not be alerted in the event of unusual water activity or a leak.

If you are still receiving alerts for irrigation afterward, we recommend adjusting the FloSense sensitivity bar. To do this, go to your Device Settings and, Under "Advanced Features", select FloSense™. For more information on how to do this, please click here.

Tip #1 Update Your Home Profile with Accurate Information

Tip #1 Update Your Home Profile with Accurate Information

When you first create a location and pair your Shutoff using the Flo by Moen App, you are asked a series of questions about the home that your Shutoff is installed in. These questions range from asking about the home’s plumbing configuration and irrigation type to the appliances and fixtures in the home. The answers to these questions are used to build your Home Profile that can provide useful information for FloSense.

We recommend providing this information as completely as possible to best inform FloSense, improve its accuracy, and to reduce the potential for false alarms.

How to Update Your Home Profile for Irrigation using the Flo by Moen App

There are a couple ways to update your Home Profile, which involves updating settings for your location and a specific device at a given location.

    Via Location Settings

App Home Page → Settings (Gear Icon) → Locations → (Select Location) → Location Profile → Edit

    1. Open the Flo by Moen App to the Home Page (default)
