Tips on Leaks

Posted on 03/11/2020 by Gabriel Halimi

Every year, millions of people are forced to address water related damage in their homes due to plumbing failures and leaks. From a sweating pipe to a burst one, water damage can come in all shapes and sizes, often costing a small fortune to remedy once detected. Beyond the financial burden, the heath and personal risks associated with water damage does not discriminate and can be debilitating for those affected. It can lead directly to the formation of harmful molds and airborne toxins that are often impossible to detect as they spread to unseen spaces within the home. “No one knows how many homes have mold behind the walls, but the best estimate is about 70 percent,” said Richard E. Gots, a doctor and founder of the International Center for Toxicology and Medicine, a biomedical consulting firm.

“No one knows how many homes have mold behind the walls, but the best estimate is about 70 percent.”

The issues that come with water damage may be a constant but home water damage itself does not have to be.  At Flo by Moen, we are addressing this problem before it has a chance to form, through proactively monitoring the integrity of your home water system and taking action if an issue is detected. We are working tirelessly to bring the power of total home security into every home, but, until then, here are some simple tips you can do to make sure you are not the unknowing victim of a home leak or plumbing failure.

Flo by Moen's TIPS ON LEAKS

If water in a toilet is moving from the tank to the bowl when nobody is flushing it, you may have a leak.

One method of detecting water leak in the toilet is to place food color in the tank.  If you see the color in the bowl after a few minutes then you may have a leak.

Monitor your water bill. Should you have higher water bill with the same usual consumption, in a given month you may have a leak.

Water leaks only worsen through time so deal with them ASAP.  Early water leak detection and repair will save you money and prevent further damage. If you ignore it, it will only get worse.

Since most water pipes are embedded in the walls and floors, make sure to check for discoloration on walls, ceilings, and carpets which could be indicators of a leak.

If you have constant water-quality issues, you may have a leak. A leak prevents consistent water levels and therefore can impact the chemistry of the water.

If the ground surrounding the pool/spa/fountain is soggy or if you have loose tiles or cracks around your outside deck area, you may have an underground leak.
